My dad taught me a definition for hope that he learned more than forty years ago from the man who led him to Jesus and discipled him as a young Christian, Dr. I. Cecil Beach: “Hope is waiting on the promises of God to take place.”

I love that definition and the bigger picture of hope it paints. Too often, the hope we cling to is hope for a desired outcome or a happy ending—for things to work out the way we want them to—and we end up disappointed when those things don’t happen or go the way we had “hoped.” But true hope isn’t rooted in what we think is “good”; it’s rooted in the One who is good.

We can hold tight to this kind of eternal and unchanging hope without wavering because God Himself never wavers. God will always keep His promises, so we can always have hope as we wait on Him.
